Getting Started as a Technical Official

I want to be a badminton umpire or referee in Ghana – what do I do?

Follow this simple step-by-step guide to begin your journey as a certified technical official with Ghana Badminton.

Step 1: Basic Setup

  • Register as a Member: You must have a valid Ghana Badminton Officials Membership.

    • ➡️ [CLICK HERE to Register for an Officials Membership] (Link to registration portal)

    • Membership is renewed annually and runs from January 1st – December 31st.

Step 2: Complete Initial Training

  • Register for a Course: Sign up for the upcoming “Local Umpire” or “Introduction to Officiating” course.

    • ➡️ [CLICK HERE to View Upcoming Courses] (Link to course calendar)

Step 3: Submit Required Documents

Once you have completed your training, please submit the following documents to the Ghana Badminton Technical Office at technical@ghanabadminton.org (or the appropriate email) to have your Official Portfolio created:

  • Passport-Sized Headshot Photo (Digital copy).

  • Valid Police Clearance / Criminal Record Check (must be less than 3 years old). This is mandatory for working with athletes.

Step 4: Obtain Uniform & Equipment

To be kitted out for your first tournament, send an email request to events@ghanabadminton.org to order your official gear.

Available Equipment:

  • Official Umpire Polo Shirt / Referee Polo Shirt

  • Ghana Badminton Clipboard

  • Digital Watch / Stopwatch

  • Set of Color Cards (Red/Yellow/Black)

  • Umpire Wallet

  • Tossing Coin

  • Measuring Tape (for net height checks)

  • Official Scoresheets

Step 5: Gain Practical Experience

  • Connect with the Technical Officials Coordinator at assignments@ghanabadminton.org to be added to the officials’ roster.

  • Once listed, you will be assigned to local and regional sanctioned events. This practical experience is essential for your development.

  • Use these opportunities to practice your skills and prepare for the next level: Regional Umpire Certification.

Step 6: Track Your Progress

  • Maintain a Logbook: Keep a personal record (digital or physical) of all matches and tournaments you officiate. Note the date, event, level of play, and your role (Umpire, Service Judge, etc.).

  • Submit for Evaluation: At the end of the season (or when you are ready for promotion), submit a PDF scan of your logbook to events@ghanabadminton.org for evaluation.
