The Role of Technical Officials

Technical Officials are among the most important volunteers in our sport. They are specially trained and qualified individuals who ensure that competitions are fair, safe, and run in accordance with the Laws of Badminton.

Badminton events of all sizes—be it a local tournament, an inter-regional championship, or a major international event—require a dedicated team of officials to function properly.

The Officials Team

A standard tournament officiating team is typically made up of the following roles:

  • Referee
The Referee is the overall manager of the tournament, responsible for ensuring the competition rules are followed and that the event runs smoothly from start to finish.

  • Umpires
The Umpire is in charge of a specific match. They are stationed at courtside and are responsible for calling decisions (service faults, lets, etc.) and managing the flow of the game.

  • Service Judges
A specialist official who focuses specifically on the legality of the serve. They assist the umpire by signaling if a service fault has occurred.

  • Line Judges
Line Judges are positioned along the court boundaries to call “in” or “out” on shots landing near the lines they are assigned to watch.

  • Tournament Organizers / Match Controllers
These officials work “off-court” to manage the administration of the event, including scheduling matches, managing walkovers, and coordinating the officials’ roster.
