Entries Open For 2023 West African Badminton Open: is an invited play for all ages

With everyone open to participate, either as a casual beginner, intermediate or elite Badminton performer, this year's 2023 West African Open will return on December 1-3, 2023, as the cream of the crop goes head-to-head in the capital, Accra.

With over 236 mammoth entries expected, this is an individual and club's open championship event with men's and women's singles and doubles and mixed doubles events. The age categories for the teams, Juniors, Seniors and veterans/masters are U15, U19, Seniors,

30-34 Social/Championship division, 35-44 Social/Championship division, 45-54 Social/Championship division, 55-64 Social/Championship division, 65+ Social/Championship division.

The Ghana Badminton Tournament Director, Delawoe Nyanyo, shared, "Following our multiple successes in the World Championships in October in the USA, we have expanded our events to cover regional countries whilst showcasing local content development across all areas. The Event is in line with our strategic plan Mission 2027, teaching our high-performance Programme with increasing global results and participation, enabling us to prioritize selected players capable of achieving national glory experience and challenge world-level opposition as part of their development in line with our Performance Programmes aiming to win African, Commonwealth, World, Paralympic and Olympic glory.

The 2023 West African Open is the most essential selection event this year. Amateur and professional athletes from the various badminton clubs and shared interest groups in Ghana will perform at a top level and put on an unforgettable show that will contribute to the growing popularisation of the sport in our country. "

Representing every member of the Badminton Community in Ghana, entries are closing in 20 days, and we cannot wait to have a "showdown." to release and burn out some stress, network and engage in the Olympic sport of Badminton.

There will be a direct qualification and elimination draw process so everyone can get enough to play–for this year's Event. During this 2023 West African Badminton Open, the National Team towards our plan also allow for further networking, competition, and educational scholarships.  

Players, both local and international residents players from across the nook and cranny, will attend the 2023 West African Badminton Open to make staff play Badminton together, promote staff friendship, build business verticals, and strengthen company cohesion and support communication& interactive platforms, whilst learning from each other and improving their badminton skills.

The winner of each category is awarded a national gold medal and crowned the 2023 West African Badminton Open Veterans Champion in their age category. The runner-up gets a silver medal, while the third-place winner receives a bronze medal.

We invite clubs and affiliate Associations to enter a maximum of six male players and six female players and three pairs in each of the up to five events in each age category.

The 2023 West African Badminton Open is a Grade 2 National Tournament with the highest-ranking points under the National Ranking System. To learn more about this, Click here.

Spotlight on World Championships debutant: Moslena Korama Adu-Agona Swedru

With Excellent Performances for the whole continent at the World Juniors Championships in Washington, USA, we are looking at the Team Ghana debutants who shined at the Badminton Championship in Spokane, USA.

Next up is Moslena Korama Adu, Agona Swedru, Ghana

Moslena Korama Adu, Agona Swedru pulled on the Team Ghana red, gold, green and kente strips shirt for the first time in Spokane, USA. Still, the African bronze medalists aren't short on significant tournament experience.

Moslena competed at African championships alongside Leslie Addo, Enoch Adu, and Korampong in the last two years and has recently developed into one of the country's best doubles players.

Before April's 2021 podium finish in Benin, Moslena had been victorious at the Benin Internationals and National Championships, where she won Individual and Team Bronze medalists.

And although she is entering the World Championships arena for the first time, the talented shuttler won't just be there to take in the occasion – she has a big dream: a World Championship medal.

"I'm delighted to be selected and part of it; I can't wait to get to the next World Championship next year," said Moslena. "It's a different feeling from the African Championships; obviously, the World Championships is huge. But Team Ghana feels like a tight-knit group, so it's different in a good way. It is just as significant an achievement for me for Ghana to have made it to the Finals of our ranking group, having met Norway in the Finals, shared the Lass from Agona Swedru."

"That was a big goal for me and Cindy Etornam, my doubles partner; I think that's given us confidence as we advance. I want to play and qualify for the 2023 African Games, the 2024 Paris Olympics, the 2027 Commonwealth Games, and the 2026 Youth Olympics in Senegal. We've put in some excellent performances, coming as African best results in twenty-three years; we're just at the stage of finding the last bit of what we need to add to our game to beat the best."

Moslena is one of the ten shuttlers representing Team Ghana in the USA, and he is quick to point out that the collective effort required goes beyond only those who step out on the court.

"The whole team plays its part," he added. "Even the ones who could not join us, as they have helped get us in the best shape for the World Championships and keep pushing us whilst in training.

"So much more goes on behind the scenes in this team- and I am excited. I wish the government would earmark a Multi-Purpose Badminton Hall in each region of my country, as we lack world-class infrastructure development. Everyone in the background has put the work in. One thing I've noticed about our players is that everyone strives to be in the best possible shape."

"My future, as far as badminton is concerned, will be tremendous. It will be so big that everybody will be proud of me, especially people from Africa.

"My family and friends will share my success one day when I lift the African trophy and the world trophy shortly. I will dedicate them to families, friends, the entire country, and even the African continent.

For any badminton professional, a World Championship debut is a memorable moment, but Moslena's first experience in front of fans will only add to the enormity of the occasion. The young Lass also believes that the atmosphere can bring out the best in him.

"The nine-court set-up was great, hopefully just added to the atmosphere. That is an excellent idea.

"These World Championships could help push the sport in Ghana, I genuinely believe that. Any time we can bring new fans to the sport is excellent; it will get extra energy to Africa.

Spotlight on World Championships debutant: Eliana Owusu Afriyie

With Excellent Performances for the whole continent at the World Juniors Championships in Washington, USA, we are looking at the Team Ghana debutants who shined at the Badminton Championship in Spokane, USA.

First up is Eliana Owusu Afriyie, Tema International School, Ghana

You’ll be hard-pressed to find another athlete more excited about joining Team Ghana than Eliana Owusu Afriyie. After only making her first debut at the National Championships debut last year, the 2023 World Junior Championships will cap off a whirlwind 18 months for the Tema International School Badminton Athlete.

She competed for Ghana in the women’s double event, and although it is her first world multi-sport event, the significance is not lost on her. The steely shuttler was determined and made Ghana proud in the USA.

“Not everyone gets to do this, even some talented players,” she said.

“So when you get the opportunity, it feels extra special. When competing regularly, playing for Ghana in a multi-sport event is something you always want to strive for.”

“My experience at the world junior badminton championships has been incredible. I was able to learn new skills that I wouldn’t have found at any other place, and it motivated me to work harder and be able to play at the levels of the top athletes. My plans concerning badminton are to keep training and practising to reach my full potential and grow. It was such a privilege to play for Ghana on one of the biggest stages, and it was an experience I will remember for a long time.

“For the next few years, knowing that the African Games and the Youth Olympics were going to be held in Ghana and Senegal respectively and that I could potentially be in the team, it was an exciting goal for me to have participated in the World Championships.

“It will surely spur me on over the next couple of years. I’m so proud to be selected by the team and can’t wait to get going.”

At 15, Eliana Owusu Afriyie is one of the youngest of the ten-person badminton squad who participated in the Championships. She is a Grade 11 student at the Tema International School, Tema.

She was training at the National Badminton Training venue in Tema and the Achimota Club when she found out the news, and even though she only had to wait a few days for the announcement to go public, it was still challenging to keep it secret.

“I told some close friends at school and family, but it was nice to share it with everyone,” she explained.

I want to thank my friends, school, and family for all my support during this World Championships. The USA has a very chilly temperature; this was a big part of the Trip that I had to adjust to. When I played my first match at the 24 Courts venue, I was tense and scared, but ultimately, I did what I could do.

“My mother, coaches and brother were very excited; they have all been supportive throughout this journey with me.”

Thankfully, with a nice blend of youth and experience across the Ghana Team, she knows her squad mates are there for help and advice when required.

“We’ve got a lot of experience in the team as well that I can learn from,” she added.

“It’s nice to have that. A few of the senior players have told me to enjoy it and that I’ve got nothing to lose, so make the most of the experience and the educational scholarships that came with it. The atmosphere was fantastic, so I want to take that all in.

Eliana also entered the Games with absolute confidence after a breakthrough year that saw the Tema-made girl take significant steps in the senior ranks and matches. Now, she wants to become known as a considerable event player after producing some of her strongest badminton at the National Championships since last year. Nothing should be off the table if she can repeat that level of performance and training going forward.

The level-headed shuttler, a dominant force at the youth level, knew time was needed to adapt to the senior class as we advanced. But Eliana believes she is getting to grips with the adjustment.

“I think the first few years of your senior career are always a challenge,” she added. “And I’m still in that period and moment.

“You’re playing more challenging matches against more formidable, more experienced opponents, and you won’t win as often or play as regularly. That can be tough and takes some getting used to. But I just needed to keep thinking of the bigger picture.”

Washington, USA– The World Championships in Washington Spokane have brought excitement to the camp of Ghana Badminton, where Ghana Secured ten scholarships for its athletes- getting dual careers in education and athlete lifestyle.

The Badminton World Federation, in partnership with the World Academy of Sport (WAoS),  awarded the ten slots Educational Scholarship programme for young dual-career athletes– who have chosen a joint educational and elite sporting life.

The University Educational scholarship programme will allow these young athletes to learn new skills that can help them improve their career opportunities and communities.

Commenting on this, Dealwoe Nyanyo "From this point on, in everything you do, you will be talked about because you are out in front, and this University Scholarship opportunity is a great opportunity for you to make Ghana proud. You are setting the pace and the footprint that others will follow. As I told you, players, Education is a ticket on the bus. No one will tell you what to do with life because you have this scholarship ticket that enables you to do what you want, but the Scholarship ticket comes with responsibility," said Dealwoe Nyanyo, Team Manager and Treasurer for the Ghana Badminton Association.

The Athlete Certificate combines fun and creative online sessions to educate athletes to become successful and knowledgeable in their sporting careers. The online course is open to young athletes between 15 and 18 years old and will be completed within three months. On completion, they will also be eligible for a post-graduate certificate in International sports management from the University of London- enabling Ghanaian athletes to have a joint educational, elite sporting life and emerging sports technologies.

The World Championships had over 48 countries in the United States fighting for honours, scholarships, and key ranking points. Ghana registered gains that can only inspire a more significant achievement sooner than later. The young players, with some of them travelling outside the country for the first time, are impressing even officials of their opponents, drawing commendations for having a great future ahead towards the 2023 African Games, 2024 Paris Olympics, 2026 Youth Olympics, and other international open and invitational events.

Ghana became the first African Country to have reached the finals in its Mix Team Group in 23 years, having lost to Norway in the finals.

Ghana set the pace again as Badminton raises the nation's flag.

In the fantastic city of Spokane, Washington, where the 2023 BWF World Junior Badminton Championship is taking place, Ghana made history and a name for the country, with the teenagers fighting as if their very existence depended on not giving up the events.

The World Championships also serves as an Olympic qualifier for the Paris 2024 global event. Before this, the Ghana Badminton team participated in South Africa, Nigeria events and a National Open last summer.

A 16-man contingent of players and officials led by Ghana's Badminton President, Yeboah Evans, is all the motivation the players need to self-motivate themselves, chalking the historic most significant achievement in the Mixed team event by any African country in 23 years of the World Championships.

Over 54 countries are in the United States fighting for honours, with Ghana presenting a few players for the tournament but registering gains that can only inspire a more significant achievement sooner than later.

The young players, with some of them travelling outside the country for the first time, are impressing even officials of their opponents, drawing commendations for having a great future ahead towards the 2023 African Games, 2024 Paris Olympics, 2026 Youth Olympics, and other international open and invitational events.

Ghana became the first African Country to have reached the finals of its Mix Team Group, having lost to Norway in the final stage. Ghanaian Players Andy Amofa and Elvis Osei won the Mixed Team Event's 4th and 5th best players, whilst Moslena Adu placed 10^th  in the overall player rankings.

Ghana had to settle for second place in the group match, which nonetheless marked a historic achievement. Amofa committed a rare service error but quickly recovered, delivering a cross-court smash to regain the lead at 11-09. In a crucial moment, Amofa surprised the Norway Aldrin NELSON  by returning a shuttle that appeared to be heading wide, but the Norway player managed to keep it close to the net. Amofa returned the shuttle and secured the point with a well-executed backflip to the other side of the court, taking an 11-09 lead. Despite Nelson saving two match points, he failed to return a body smash by Amofa near the net. With a final score of 3-0, Ghana lost the last game and handed Norway a winning match, concluding the Ghanaian players one of their career's most riveting badminton games.

Ghana performed far better than the earlier 2017 World Championships in Yogyakarta, Indonesia and pole position for the 2024 France Olympics Qualification ranking with four other international matches until the deadline of April 28, 2028. The Ministry of Youth & Sport, The accra2023 secretariat, the Ghana Olympic Committee, the Ghana Textile Manufacturing Company, the Sports Writers Association of Ghana, Super Sports Blitz, parents and some individual donors have supported us on this journey of future hope for our young lads.

Ghana Badminton Squad for Badminton World Junior Championships announced.

Accra-Ghana, September 2, 2023: Ghana Badminton-the Governing Body of Badminton in Ghana, today announced the Team Ghana Contingent, which will lead the Golden Badminton Shuttlers at the 23^rd World Juniors Championships, set to take place in Spokane, USA.

The World Juniors Championships organizers are bracing for the largest-ever World Championships this September, with eighteen badminton courts assembled inside the venue to accommodate more than 600 athletes, 900 coaches, officials, and VIPs and more than 187 media personnel, all from more than 44 countries for the almost three-week-long Championship on U.S. Soil from September 24 to October 10 2023 with a burst of life for Ghana and Mauritius will represent Africa for the BWF World Championships. Ghana begins its quest to conquer the world in the Championship.

Sensational Racheal Quarcoo, Cindy Tornyenor, Moslena Adu, Eliana Afriyie, Gloria Nyame and Sheila Taylor will lead the female squad. The male team includes Leslie Nii Addo, Elvis Osei, Ebenezer Korampong, Michael Botwe, Nathaniel Kwaw and Andy Amofa.

The World Championship Squad team includes a combined local and international experience of more than 186 matches, featuring 34 first-class matches, including representing Ghana at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, the African U15, the African Seniors Championships, the African U19 Championships and other central Multi-sport Games.

The thirteen-member playing squad and twelve technical team members of team managers, coaches, nutritionists, physiotherapists, team psychologists and team handlers have already represented Ghana nationally and internationally. Before this, all team members participated in World Anti-Doping Education and passed the examinations with distinction certifications.

Ghana is thrilled to be placed in Group F with France, Spain, Hong Kong, China, and Belgium. Ghana's first match begins on September 25, 2023, with Belgium; Ghana is looking to top its group as being the best African team, relying on its triumph in its last World Championships.

This new squad is energized with hope as non-residential local preparation has begun in earnest since July 20, 2023. As per the tournament's rule, Ghana will feature in the event from the group stage scheduled for September 25, 2023, till October 8, 2023.

"I'm thrilled and proud to represent Ghana at the World Junior Championships in USA," said Racheal Quarcoo. "It will be my first World Championships, but I've closely followed the last two editions and saw how a great performance could be a career-defining moment. Representing Ghana again is always an honour, and I'm ready to leave it all on the court for my country; I can't wait to get started!"

Manager of Athlete Development, Delawoe Nyanyo, is well aware of the potential of Ghana's Badminton team.

"Ghana's Badminton athletes will be looking to bring home golds in the USA for Ghana. Our top athletes are well into the 2023-24 Olympic season and ready for the Games. 2023 Badminton Open National Championships: Hear from the National Winners and see Podium photos from the event

This year's 2023 Ghana Open championships ended over the weekend with puzzling and thrilling participation from across the country, with 169 players and 314 matches on display at the Trust Sports Emporium, Accra event. The individual and club's open championship events saw age categories for the corporate teams, Juniors, Seniors, and Masters, are U15, U19, U30, 30-39,40-49, 50-59,60-69, and 70-79.

A total of 34 athletes have been identified to achieve the results for the national team selection to the World Championships, Individual events, African Championships, and the African Games to be held here in Ghana. In the U-15 category, Agona Nyakrom Stars dominated the entire results in the Boy's and Girl's Singles events, with sensational Adu Mintah Obapomba, Takyi Melchizedek and Nunoo Sarpei Gabriel claiming podium results whilst Ama Koramaa Moslena, Amiokor Sarpei Margaret and Koramaa Adu Hannah claimed the podium results in the Girls U-15 category.

In the U-19 category, undisputed Quarcoo Racheal, Ertornam Tornyenyor Cindy, and Afriyie Eliana won podium medals in the Girls category, whilst Nii Addo Obeng Shang Francis, Addo Leslie Adote Addo, Amofa Andy won podium medals in the Boys category.

In the U-19 BD Category, Korampong Ebenezer/Osei Elvis, Nii Addo Obeng Shang Francis/Ankrah Jonathan, and Amofa Andy/Adu Enoch achieved podium medals.

Newly sensation Alphous Kelvin Evans, Abdul-Samad Ahmad and Tamakloe Aaron achieved podium results in the Men Singles Seniors category.

The undisputed fifteen-year-old, Quarcoo Racheal, defeated all the females in the Women's Singles event, beating Nantuo Prospera in the finals to the delight of all national dignitaries.

In the keenly contested Mix Double Event, Nantuo Prospera/Alphous Kelvin, Regina Awontemi Asiabeka/Abdul-Samad Ahmad, and Ertornam Tornyenyor Cindy/Addo Leslie Adote Addo won podium medals to the amazement and dazzling performances of everyone and national media.

The event brought the discovery pair of Ofoli Rabiatu/Quarcoo Racheal, defeating the reigning champions Ertornam Tornyenyor Cindy/Nantuo Prospera and Yengnone Hilda Hectorina Napour/Botchway Lilian in the finals to all all-women doubles final event.

Accra2023 LOC Chairman, Dr Kweku Ofosu Asare, shared, "I have been highly appraised of the talent exhibited by the various team and very promising to win medals for Team Ghana next year, as Ghana hosts the African Games. Badminton is an Olympic qualifier for the African Games event, and Ghana Badminton will have the necessary infrastructure to host mega international and domestic events after the 2023 Africa Games."

In the Veterans Men's Double Category, Noah Ayim/Delawoe Nyanyo, Rahul Das Mohan/Karumli Jayan and Douglas Coleman/Ibrahim Ishaq from Adenta Badminton Club also won podium medals.

The winners of each category are awarded a national gold medal and crowned National Champion in their age category. The runner-up gets a silver medal, while the third-place winner receives a bronze medal. Participants also earned the glory of participating and selection for educational scholarships and prize money of GHc 20,000 and national certificates. The event also saw the assessment of technical officials during the tournament, all in preparation for the African Games.

"I am thrilled with my performance" I've made many people proud, and it's nice to know all of the hard work I've put in during the past few months has come to fruition." Racheal Quarcoo, the most decorated player at the national championship, said after her final win.

Moslena Ama Korama, the National U-15 Girls Champion, commented, "Since the start of the tournament, my touch, feel, and movement has been on form," she said.

"I've been focusing on increasing my physical effort and going that extra mile to improve my overall fitness, and I'm glad I have achieved podium results. " Eliana Afriyie, Bronze medalist in the Women's category.

"More than anything, the Men's Singles title has given me plenty of confidence for the future. I am now looking to play more tournaments to get more international experience," Kelvin Alphous said.

BADMINTON WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: TEAM GHANA BEGINS QUEST IN GROUP F AGAINST BELGIUM

The 23rd World Badminton Championships begins the burst of life as Ghana and Mauritius will represent Africa for the BWF World Championships in Spokane, USA. Ghana begins its quest to conquer the world in the championship.
The World Juniors Championships organisers are bracing for the largest-ever World Championships this September, with eighteen badminton courts assembled inside the venue to accommodate more than 600 athletes, 900 coaches, officials, and VIPs and more than 187 media personnel, all from more than 60 countries for the almost three-week-long championship on U.S. Soil.

At today's Mixed Team Event draw ceremony in Kuala Lumper, Malaysia, Team Ghana is thrilled to be placed in Group F with France, Spain, Hong Kong, China, and Belgium.

Team Ghana begins its first match on September 25, 2023. In the previous edition, Ghana achieved the best result by an African finish at the World Juniors Championships. "We have grown the sports in every nook and cranny of the country and are thrilled with the amount of national support the world championships are receiving; it is a demonstration of our thematic targets within our Mission 2027 Strategic Plan, and we will make the African continent proud again!" said Ghana Badminton President Evans Yeboah.
The World Championships provides Badminton's billion fans and global media a first glimpse of the future stars, and it is the first opportunity for talented young badminton players to represent their country in a world event.

Participation in the World Junior Championships is essential for Ghana Badminton for the following reasons-It provides a benchmark to compare the level of development in Ghana with the rest of the world, enabling an excellent development experience for athletes, coaches, and officials.
The most important is to bring key ranking points opportunities for BWF rankings towards the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

It is also an opportunity to experience top-level competition and perhaps put them on the pathway towards becoming one of the future stars. Ghanaian officials will also participate in Training Camps and Coaching Clinics to enrich the global experience as the national Association spurs its development and strategic growth of the sport.
Ghana is fielding the best contingent in line with its National High-Performance programme and asking for a national team shirt sponsorship for the federal delegation from private and public firms benefiting from a large media local and international media attention and markets.
