Badminton Benin International: Ghana’s U35 Team wins two Bronze Medals

Ouidah, Benin, Aug. 24, GNA- Ghana’s quest to win a gold medal in the ongoing Badminton Benin International ended yesterday following Ghana’s topmost athlete Abdul Ahmad-Samad elimination by a Kazakhstan and South Africans at the semi-final stage. The first of any Ghanaian in Benin Internationals in ten years.
Despite their impressive performance in the round 16 stage, the team faced a Herculean task against experienced sides who have had many international tournament exposures- with some counting thirty-two appearances in one year alone. In furtherance to this performance, no player got below the quarter final stage of the international competition
In the Men’s Singles event, Ghana’s number one rising badminton player Abdul Ahmad-Samad was ousted by a Kazakhstan player, Dmitry Panarin, who has tasted over 43 international competitions in two years and winning a bronze medal at the 2018 Youth Olympics in Argentina. The Ghanaian athlete lost with a score of 21-19, 21-18 at the semi-final stage.
Prospera Nantou, Ghana’s Women Singles prospect, also succumbed to South African’s Johanita Scholtz in a game which ended 21-5, 21-8 in the Women’s Single.
In the Men’s Double, Ruan Snyman and Robert Summers, also from South Africa beat Ghana’s pair, Ebenezer Korampong and Samuel Lamptey 21-11, 21-13 whilst the latter’s compatriot Daniel Steyn and Bogani Von defeated Ruddock Quarcoo and Aaron Tamakloe with a score of 21-12, 21-14 and Cameron Coetzer and Jarred Eliot eliminated Emmanuel Amoako and Elvis Osei with 21-12, 21-14
In the Women’s Double, Amy Ackerman and Diane Olivier (South Africa) posted a painful defeat to Ghana’s Prospera Nantuo and Cindy Tornyenyor in the semi-finals. The game ended 21-9, 21-10, whilst Demi Botha Deidra and Laurens Jordaan (South Africa) conquered Gloria Nyame and Racheal Quarcoo from Ghana, with 21-10, 21-2 in the quarterfinals.
Having lost in the other events, South African’s pair Robert White and Diane Olivier inflicted more pain to Team Ghana to thrash Cindy Tornyenyor and Ahmad Abdul-Samad with 21-7, 21-16 in the Mixed Double category.
Also in that category, Alphous and Prospera outclassed compatriots Aaron Tamakloe and Gloria Nyame 21-15, 21-11 to pick a semi-final slot but lost out to South African Jarred Elliot and Deidre Laurens Jordaan after recording 21-7, 21-16.
Despite losing, per the Badminton rules, Ghana was awarded two bronze medals for reaching the semi-final stage in the Mixed Doubles and Women’s Double Event, giving the country the needed round one of cumulative points towards the Badminton Mixed Team Event qualification for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Birmingham-United Kingdom.
Ghana begun her campaign for the African U-15 Championship on Sunday, August 22, at the Stade de l’amitié Générale Mathieu. In furtherance to this, Ghana is also taking part in an international training camp for the sub-juniors age category- building up the essence of Badminton technique play at the world class level for its national athletes. The 2020-2024 High Performance Plan by the association (linked here) is making continuous progress as the national Badminton team is exceeding target.
