Ghana Wins Historic First Medal at 2025 African Youth Games in Badminton
ACCRA, Ghana – December 11, 2025 – Ghana’s national badminton team has secured the country’s first medal at the 4th African Youth Games in Luanda, Angola, winning Bronze in the prestigious Mixed Team Relay event on Wednesday.
The young Ghanaian squad demonstrated remarkable composure and skill on their path to the podium. After a convincing 2-0 quarter-final victory over South Africa, the team fought valiantly in the semi-finals before ultimately clinching bronze with a decisive 2-0 win over Egypt in the medal match.
The historic achievement was powered by standout performances from Amofa Andy, Obapomba Adu-Mintah, Rachel Quarcoo, and Moslena Asu. Special praise was reserved for Andy Amofa and Obapomba Adu-Mintah, whose dynamic play and leadership on court have earned them recognition as "the 2025 SWAG Badminton Player of the Year" among supporters.
"The energy and determination of this team have been phenomenal," said Yeboah Evans, President of the Ghana Badminton Association. "This bronze is more than a medal—it is a testament to the talent, hard work, and strategic development within our Junior Development Programme. We are incredibly proud and see this as a significant step forward for Ghanaian badminton."
Held from December 10–20, 2025, the African Youth Games in Luanda bring together young athletes from across the continent and serve as a key qualifying event for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games. Ghana’s strong performance in badminton positions the team as a serious contender for next year's Youth Olympics.
The campaign continues as Ghana's shuttlers enter the Men’s and Women’s Singles, Doubles, and Mixed Doubles events, aiming to convert their momentum into additional medals. The team carries significant confidence from a stellar performance at July's African Schools Games in Algeria, where they were Ghana's most successful sport, securing 2 Gold, 1 Silver and 2 Bronze medals.
Ghana’s participation in the Games is supported by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ghana Olympic Committee, with athletes competing across multiple disciplines, including athletics, basketball, boxing, cycling, judo, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, and weightlifting.
The 2025 African Youth Games mark the first time the event is hosted by a Lusophone nation, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Angola’s independence. With competitions taking place across three host cities, the Games aim to promote sport, foster cultural exchange, and develop young talent ahead of future international competitions.
The Ghana Badminton Association congratulates the athletes, coaches, and technical team on this milestone and encourages the nation to continue supporting Team Ghana throughout the Games.
