Ghana Makes Historic Debut at BWF World Senior Championships in Thailand
PATTAYA, THAILAND – September 10, 2025 – The Ghana Badminton Federation proudly announces a historic milestone for the nation's sport as Mr. Amitabh Coomar becomes the first Ghanaian athlete to compete at the BWF World Senior Championships. The prestigious tournament, which has drawn over 1,663 participants from 73 nations, is underway in Pattaya, Thailand, from September 6-14, 2025.
Competing in the fiercely contested Men's Singles 50+ category, Coomar's pioneering participation marks a significant leap for Ghanaian badminton, showcasing its growing reach and competitive spirit on the world stage. His presence among the globe's finest senior athletes underscores the universal power of dedication and passion for sport.

"His journey to this championship is a testament to personal perseverance and the rising level of our sporting community. He has carried the flag of Ghana with immense pride and has paved the way for future generations of Ghanaian shuttlers, proving that age is no barrier to achievement."
Despite the challenging competition, Coomar's historic participation is celebrated as a landmark victory. His performance has garnered significant attention and respect from the international badminton community, highlighting Ghana's emerging presence on the world map.
Reflecting on his experience, Amitabh Coomar shared: "Competing on this world stage was the culmination of a lifelong dream and years of training. This experience in Thailand was truly humbling; to stand among the world's best senior players was an honour I will never forget. The level of competition was incredibly high, and every point was a learning experience. The support from back home in Ghana was my driving force. My participation was about more than just my matches; it was about putting Ghana on the map of world badminton. I am immensely proud to have been the first to represent Ghana at this prestigious event, and I hope my journey shows every athlete—young and senior—that with dedication, no goal is out of reach. I am grateful to everyone who made this historic step possible, and I am hopeful that this is not an end, but a beginning that will open the door for more Ghanaian players to compete internationally in the future."
Outside of badminton, Coomar is the current Men's Singles U55 National Champion in Ghana and serves as the Business Head at Caraway Pte Limited, a company majority-owned by Olam Caraway Pte Ltd., the holding company for all of Olam's Packaged Foods businesses and Sanyo Foods.
