Accra, Ghana – March 21, 2025 – In a historic moment for African sports, Ghana has been awarded the hosting rights for the 2025 Africa AirBadminton Championships, becoming the first West African nation to host this prestigious continental event. The announcement was made official by the Badminton Confederation Africa (BCA) and Badminton World Federation following a highly competitive bidding process involving many countries.

This landmark achievement underscores Ghana’s growing influence in the global badminton community and its commitment to advancing the sport across the continent. The 2025 Africa AirBadminton Championships will serve as a qualifier for the inaugural AirBadminton World Cup, set to take place in November 2025 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Ghana’s Grand Slam: 21 Days of Non-Stop Badminton Action

In addition to hosting the Africa AirBadminton Championships, Ghana is proud to announce Ghana’s Grand Slam, a 21-day non-stop badminton extravaganza from July 27 to August 17, 2025. This unprecedented event will feature:

Accra, Ghana – March 3, 2025– Ghana Badminton, in collaboration with the Badminton World Federation (BWF), Badminton Africa Confederation  and the World Academy of Sport (WAoS), is proud to announce the launch of a transformative scholarship program aimed at empowering young Ghanaian athletes. The initiative will award 100 scholarships to dual-career athletes aged 15 to 18, providing them with the opportunity to develop new skills that enhance their career prospects and contribute positively to their communities.

World Junior Mixed Team Championships 2023

This groundbreaking program is designed to support young badminton players in schools and communities across Ghana. Through an online course, participants will gain valuable knowledge and skills that complement their athletic pursuits, preparing them for success both on and off the court.

This is the third year Ghana Badminton with its partners has awarded scholarships to over 200 Ghanaian Students in the last five years. The Athlete Certificate is a combination of fun and creative online sessions that are designed to educate athletes to become successful and knowledgeable in their sporting careers. The online course is open to young athletes between 15 and 18 years old and will be completed within three months. On completion, they will also be eligible for a post-graduate certificate in International sports management from the University of London- enabling Ghanaian athletes to have a joint educational, elite sporting life and emerging sports technologies.

Program Highlights:

  • Eligibility: Open to young badminton players aged 15 to 18 years.
  • Objective:To equip young athletes with skills that improve their career opportunities and enable them to make a meaningful impact in their communities.
  • Format:Fully online, allowing flexible learning alongside athletic training.

ISSAG Schools Badminton Championship inspires the next generation of athletes

Accra, 21st October: Seventy-four students of 18 teams from Nine International Schools participated in this year's International School Sports Association of Ghana's (ISSAG) Badminton Competition at the SOS Hermann Gmeiner College in Tema. The one-day event occurred on Saturday, 19th October 2024, with Ghana International School (GIS) boys emerging winners of the Boys Badminton team event and the Roman Ridge School emerging winners of the Girls Badminton Team Event for 2024 International School Sports Association Games (ISSAG) competition.

The essence of school competitions gives students an edge in applications for scholarships, student programs, and other essential activities. Players from these international schools need to prove they've got the proper knowledge, skill set, and personality—offering a wholesome benefit from the National governing body of the sport.

All the players showed that they're not just high achievers but driven young people who constantly look for opportunities to stretch and challenge themselves, as the fierce competition gave rise to the occasion of a competition, making an excellent way for the players to identify the strengths and skills that may otherwise fly under the radar in the regular day-to-day of the classroom- whose competition medal was the catalyst for a journey from classroom detentions to developing a world-changing sport of Badminton.

There was lots of fantastic play throughout the day, and it was great to see our players put all their training into action. There were some challenging games, and all school teams showed resilience and determination.

"As we look ahead to the 2025 season of Ghana Badminton hosting the 2025 African Schools Championships and the African U15 Championship, together with JE Wilson Ghana International Jnrs-we reflect on the importance of the legacy of some of these athletes representing their schools through this coveted event, and not only did we want to ensure the pupils were at the heart of the action on the court, but we also used innovative ways to use their skills outside of the SOS Badminton hall, bringing parents, school faculty and the general public to witness Badminton at the Highist of international school participation-These values are the heartbeat of what we at Ghana Badminton aim to do every day in enabling Badminton to be a sport for everyone" Shared by Jessica Lomotey- Events & Competitions Officer, Ghana Badminton

In the boy's team event category, Ghana International School came first, followed by SOS Herman College as first runner-up, and International Community School became 2nd Runner-up.

In the Girls' team Event, Roman Ridge came first, followed by Ghana International School as the first Runner-up and Tema International School as the second runner-up.

Miss Eliana Owusu Afriyie from the Tema International School won the best player for girls category, and Lai Yi Yang from Ghana International School won the best player for Boys event category.

Mr Ken Kenneth, ISSAG Co-ordinator, shared, "The development of our International school's sports has taken the lead year on year, and our collaboration with Ghana Badminton over the years has been great; Badminton's pedestal has been welcoming and fits within our strategic development of the sport. This is a massive organisation and setting, and we are happy every school enjoyed it."

Schools that participated in the 2024 ISSAG Badminton Competition were SOS Hermann Gmeiner International School, Tema International School, The Roman Ridge School, Akosombo International School, East Airport International School, Faith Montessori School, Ghana International School, International Community School, Morgan International Community School

Podium winners received trophies, participation medals, and other participatory invitations for national competitions this December 2024 and the 2025 Africa Schools Championship, which will be hosted in Ghana.

Ghana Badminton, first in Africa to launch the best-redesigned National Sports Federation website.

GHANA BADMINTON FIRST IN AFRICA TO LAUNCH THE BEST-REDESIGNED NATIONAL SPORTS FEDERATION WEBSITE

April 16, 2023, Accra, Ghana-Ghana Badminton Association, the governing body of the Olympic sports of Badminton in Ghana, representing circa 4.2 million nationwide members of the sport, after many days of hard work and dedication from our local and international technology development team, is pleased to announce the launch of our updated website!

The national federation aimed to create a more valuable, user-centric, responsive playing and partnership resource across all platforms and devices during the redesign process. Specifically, we focused on making it easier for our users to learn and locate helpful information about our sport as a daily solution for their particular sports lifestyle and industry available at their desks and on mobile devices.

The redesigned website provides instrumental case studies with athletes and membership focus and highlights completed projects and themes by athletes (beginners, recreational and elite) across the country, created with a view of our partners and paid-up members within our knowledge centre along with other pages on processes and governance to expand your industry knowledge, all integrated into an online payment system.

Dr Benjamin Baah-Konadu, Ghana Badminton’s Event Officer, shared, “Our cardinal objective during this redesigned website process was to create a debt of information on our sport, governance, structures, the historical performance of our national teams, our athlete’s national ranking, events, 63 sporting policies and guidelines. In line with our forward-looking development strategy, we have also commissioned and introduced the first safeguarding guidelines and procedures for our general membership- the first in Africa by any Badminton national federation.”

Dr Baah Konadu added, “This redesigned website, an upgrade from the first website, will provide our growing members with several membership plans and categories with more tools to share their ideas and solutions to some of the most challenging development, events and governance issues, all in an open, visibly transparent manner. In addition, they can achieve their sports goals by combining their talent, innovation and initiatives.”

The redesigned website has 143 pages of information. It has attracted 756,114 views in the last 36 hours of its launch, attracting viewers to feel and review information on events, development, competitions, safeguarding and membership, to mention but a few.

Evans Yeboah, President of Ghana Badminton, added: “In line with our Mission 2027 Strategic Plan, we are excited about this redesigned platform because it is an integral part of our strategy to hone the popularity of our members and shared interest groups, raise the profile of our partner’s networks and increase their membership. We are excited that, once again, we are providing the lead and leadership for many African sporting national federations to emulate whilst being aware of this fantastic resource, access, and the opportunities enhancement within our integrated marketing communication in this digital age has to offer.”

The National Federation has been promoting the sport with its inclusivity and diversity; reminiscing this, in 2021, Ghana Badminton signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Education’s (UoE) Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Sports (HPERS) Department, Winneba, thus becoming the first in Africa to Implement Shuttle Time University Course. The Mou has helped to establish and undertake cooperative programmes in badminton research, university courses, training, scholarships, technical and physical education for athletes and technological development in sport management and administration, including implementing Badminton World Federation’s Shuttle Time University Course.

Again, In technical officiating and coaching, in May 2022, one of its graduated 273 technical officials, Gabriel Atseku, became the first Ghanaian to be appointed as Badminton Africa accredited umpire in 60 years. In line with the 2027 Strategic Mission Plan, Ghana Badminton trains and develops local referees to the highest national level, allowing the general public more development and Event information through its website and other social media handles.

Nothing compared to last year’s Commonwealth Games success bringing memories of how the national team performed at the multisport event in Birmingham- producing the best individual results since Ghana Badminton made its appearance at the Commonwealth Games after their debut in the 1998 Games held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Alphous Kelvin Evans Named 2022 SWAG Badminton Player Of The Year

January 1, 2023-Ghana Badminton’s Champion Alphous Kelvin Evans has been named Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) 2022 Best Badminton Player Award, according to a release from the SWAG Secretariat On Christmas Eve.

During the eligibility period from December 2021 to November 2022, Alphous was almost always unstoppable, winning many laurels in Africa, including National and African Championship events.

His pinnacle across the year was his excellent performance during the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, United Kingdom, ranking 17th globally in Men’s Double Event, 23rd in Men’s Singles Event and 17th in the Mix Doubles Event of the 72 Commonwealth Nations and States.

Badminton was one of the sports contested at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, held in Birmingham, England. The 2022 Commonwealth Games was the fifteenth staging of Badminton at the Commonwealth Games since its inclusion in 1966 and the second staging within England specifically. Ghana Badminton made its seventh appearance at the Commonwealth Games after its debut in the 1998 Games held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Alphous, having reflected on a 2017 national journey for Kelvin Evans Alphous, where he began his badminton career in his Senior Secondary School days at the Swedru School of Business led by the late Ebenezer Affaidu as his Coach. Ebenezer Affaidu was a Badminton Coach from the Shuttle Time Course in 2017/2018 under the Ghana Badminton Schools Project, educating and training potential Badminton players across the country.

In 2019, Alphous participated in national events and graduated onwards through national team selections, climbing on the part of growth towards his African Games, Commonwealth Games and Paris 2024 Olympic Qualification.

Alphous shared, “I can’t believe I am receiving this high-level award on the same stage with some of the world’s advanced players. It’s a dream come true, and I am excited about it. This will be my second award, and I am delighted that sports writers and journalists in Ghana have reckoned with my efforts and will continue to work hard to make my National Federation and Ghana proud. There is nothing compared to the national award, and it holds a special place in our sport. The International and National Games gave me my first exposure to big championships and multi-sport events. Coming from a village near Agona Swedru is a privilege, and this will inspire me to do more in my sports career.” Alphous Kelvin

Alphous is also the Ghana Badminton Athletes Commission Chair, whose constitutional mandate since 2020 has been to represent and promote athletes’ views and interests at the highest level of decision in Badminton in furthering the objectives of Ghana Badminton to be the leading national federation in the country through its Strategic Plan ‘Mission 2017-2027’

The 47th MTN Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Awards will be on the theme “Honouring Sports Excellence.” The event is slated for January 28, 2022, in Accra and will witness 25 individual awards, ten special awards, and the President’s Special Award for the Best Journalist of the Year.

Badminton Shines at 2022 Ghana University Sports Games

November 20, 2022, Accra-Ghana

One of Ghana’s most prominent Universities, Kumasi Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, hosted the multi-sport event from 4 to November 19 2022 where badminton talents from eight Ghanaian universities got to compete in team and individual events of the Ghana University Games (GUSA). Growing the sport in an upward growth of thirty per cent more universities taking part in the Sports at the GUSA Games compared to the last held Edition in Accra. Badminton sport awards 18 different categories of gold, silver, and bronze medals at all Multi Sports Competitions.

The 27th Edition of the GUSA Games was back because of the COVID-19 outbreak and its subsequent rescheduling. The major university multi-sport event, organized by GUSA, fielded the most active racket sport at the University Games. The University of Ghana, Accra, hosted the last university sports event.

Eight noble public Universities took part in the Games, with Universities like the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), the University of Ghana (UG), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Education, Winneba.

(UEW), Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AMMUSTED), the University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS), WA, the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and the University of Development Studies (UDS). These Universities took part in the Mix Team and Individual Events, with UEW topping the medal table with 6 Gold, 3 Silver and one bronze, whilst KNUST placed second place with 2 Silver medals, UG placed third with 1 Silver and four bronze whilst UCC was placed fourth with one bronze medal. AMMUSTED, UDS, UBIS and UPSA will look towards winning an award in the next edition, rekindling the success of fledgling players in the Competition.

As the Governing Body of Badminton in Ghana and representing every member of the Badminton Community in Ghana, we provided a well-organized officiating, governed, compliant, and inclusive global sport towards the Games.

With 23 National Accredited Technical Officials at the Games, GUSA and Ghana Badminton have worked closely for years, having been official partners since the late 80s, Participants, stakeholders and shared interest groups. The KNUST University Community has expressed positive feelings about Badminton being a compulsory sport at the biannual GUSA Games.

GUSA is excited to see Badminton, as always, part of the African University Games recently held in Kenya and the World University Games coming off in Chengdu, China 2023, as one of the core sports on the programme. Badminton was one of the 9 Sports at the GUSA University Games, contributing to the around 1000 students representing 14 Public universities. The Badminton Competition comprised the standard format of Mix team and Individual Events and took place from 7 to November 15, 2022.

KNUST Sports Directorate and Kumasi Technical Institute, an experienced host

The KNUST Sports Directorate and the official venue, KTI School, where academic badminton players compete for the universities they represented, was the sports centre at the KTI Sports Auditorium, a necessary Badminton event centre since the 1970s, where KNUST and GUSA officials remarked as one of the most prominent technical Schools in Kumasi. The over 3000 students watch from the side-lines of the Hall each day chanting and wavering their best and newfound athletes notable for being role models for them. It was fun to watch them playing and supporting the team.

An unforgettable experience

With 31% of participating student-athletes have come from our Badminton in the Schools Project-a project launched in 2018 to unearth and support the growth of sports in Schools across the country and currently covering 72% of all school population in Ghana. The national federation was excited to see the centre of excellence stars from “not too popular” Universities exhibit a can-do spirit leading to a lot of learning and aspiration with fond memories of the event in Kumasi.

Ghana Badminton: Gabriel Atseku Becomes Ghana’s First Badminton Africa Accredited Umpire In 60 Years

Accra, Ghana May o6, 2022- Ghana Badminton: Gabriel Atseku Becomes Ghana’s First Badminton Africa Accredited Umpire In 60 Years

Ghana Badminton Association, the governing and supervisory body of Badminton in Ghana, has expanded its diversity of technical officiating for the sport as Gabriel Atseku received his Badge certificate as an Accredited African Badminton Umpire- First in six decades for Ghana.

Since 2017, Ghana Badminton has introduced a technical officiating strategy plan where it had grown to 84 technical Officials in the national accreditation and certification pathway, an achievement enviable of a good deal of Badminton sporting nations in Africa.

In line with Ghana Badminton’s 2027 Strategic Mission Plan, Ghana Badminton train’s develop and assess umpires to the highest national level for their top national and international tournaments. Umpires who are at a sufficient level and experience may then be assessed and promoted to become accredited or certificated at the continental level and finally through the world level.

We look at this capacity building for our technical officials focusing on achieving an action thematic plan to increase representation and increase the diversity of technical officiating with a key criterion for selection of quality, skills, and experience; greater badminton people who add value.

Ghana Badminton President & Board Chair Yeboah Evans said: “On behalf of the Board, and members a hearty congratulation to Gabriel Atseku on this continental success, this prowess exhibited by you had shown success towards our National Technical Officiating pathway, providing career options for persons interest in becoming technical officials within the sport. Our development in technical capacity is leaping and in the last six decades to be the first Ghanaian on this achievement gives us joy and growth-an enviable emulation by all persons looking to be in Badminton. We are also particularly excited that 84 more technical officials are at various levels of national accreditation all in tandem with preparation also for the African Games in Ghana next year and the start of our first National Premier League in July 2022″

Commenting, on this, Gabriel Atseku, Ghana’s First African Accredited Umpire In 60 Years shares: “I am thrilled and look forward to building on this achievement to develop the sport as a source of encouragement to climbing the ladder of certification and officiating at the World level. I thank the support of family, school, and Ghana Badminton, for the selfless tacit knowledge and guide towards this progressive pathway.

In Badminton, the umpire has the authority over a particular match and oversees the badminton court and its immediate surrounds. The umpire ensures it conducted the match under the Laws of Badminton, the rules and regulations of the sport and any other regulations pertinent to the specific tournament. The umpire’s jurisdiction shall exist from the time the players enter the court before the match until they leave the court after the match.

Ghana Badminton’s technical officials are an integral part of the Badminton sport, and it is their involvement that makes it possible for Ghana Badminton to run structured and fair tournaments, as the governing and supervisory body of the sport. Officiating is another way to take part in badminton, whether you are currently playing, retired, or just have a passion for badminton. Taking part in an officiating workshop is also a great way to learn about tournament regulations and the rules of competition; We encourage parents and friends of competing athletes to join in officials’ workshop to develop their knowledge of the sport.
